Driveway Extension Cost in NJ (2026): What It Costs to Widen an Asphalt Driveway, and the Town Rules to Check First
A 200 square foot asphalt extension, enough for one more car beside the first, works out to about $1,400 to $3,000 in 2026. That uses the $7 to $15 per square foot that Angi and HomeAdvisor list for installed asphalt. In New Jersey the price is only half the answer. Six of the seven town codes read for this guide count driveways or pavement toward a lot coverage limit, and two cap driveway width in feet.

Quick Answer
- Installed asphalt: $7 to $15 per square foot (Angi and HomeAdvisor, 2026).
- One more car (200 sq ft): about $1,400 to $3,000. Angi's national average for that size is $1,900 (concrete).
- Extras: removing old pavement runs $250 to $3,000 and permits $50 to $200 on HomeAdvisor's national list.
- Town rules: where driveways count, coverage caps run from 30% to 70% of the lot in the zones read. Union Township and Clifton also cap width in feet.
- Before digging: New Jersey law requires a call to 811 at least three full business days ahead.
What a Driveway Extension Costs in 2026
Randy does not publish an extension price, so this guide uses the figures national cost sites published this year. Each one is listed with its date. They disagree in one place, and the difference matters for your budget.

Why Angi shows two asphalt numbers. Angi's extension article prices asphalt at $2.50 to $5 per square foot, worked out from $100 to $200 a ton at 4 inches thick. That is the material. Angi's own paving guide puts installed asphalt at $7 to $15, and HomeAdvisor lists the same range. Budget from the installed figure.
Angi's $800 to $3,000 range, with a $1,900 average, is for an extension in any material. Its $1,900 example is a 200 square foot concrete extension. For the price of a whole new asphalt driveway rather than an addition, see the asphalt paving cost guide.
Cost by Size: Five Common Extensions Worked Out
Square feet times $7 at the low end and $15 at the high end. This is arithmetic on the published range, not a quote. Two of the sizes come from the forum posts that rank for this search.

What Adds to the Price
- •Removing old pavement or concrete: $250 to $3,000 on HomeAdvisor's 2026 list.
- •Leveling the ground: $1 to $2 per square foot, per Angi's paving guide. Angi's extension article says grading, retaining walls and removing stumps, trees or old pavement add to the cost.
- •Labor: $5 to $7 per square foot. HomeAdvisor gives that range for asphalt and says labor is about half of a driveway job.
- •The work itself: Bob Vila notes that widening may involve removing trees or stumps, grading, installing a base and paving.
- •Permits: $50 to $200 on HomeAdvisor's national list. In New Jersey, Clifton charges $25 for a driveway 10 feet or wider across the sidewalk. Union Township charges $10 for an apron permit, plus a $100 deposit and $5 for each of three inspections.
- •A wider curb cut: if the street end gets wider, the apron rules apply. See the New Jersey driveway apron guide for permits, fees and width caps by town.
The Town Rules: Coverage and Width in Seven North Jersey Towns
A wider driveway adds paved area. Most towns limit how much of a lot can be covered, and some limit how wide a driveway can be. Each row reports only what the linked code says. - ✓Gravel is not a loophole everywhere. Millburn counts gravel driveways and pavers as paved. South Orange counts driveways whether paved or unpaved.
- ✓Clifton works the other way. Its lot coverage counts structures only, so the limits that bite are the 20 and 30 foot widths and the front-yard paving rule.
- ✓Side yards are protected. Union Township bars a driveway from the required side or rear yard. Clifton keeps it 5 feet off the side property line.
- ✓South Orange changed its rule this year. Ordinance 2026-07, adopted March 9, 2026, rewrote the impervious surface definition. Older advice about South Orange may be out of date.
Check Your Own Lot in Five Steps
- 1Find your zone and lot area. Your town's zoning map gives the zone. Your property survey or tax record gives the lot area in square feet.
- 2Add up what is already covered. Measure the house, garage, driveway, walks and patio, using your town's definition from the table above.
- 3Add the extension and compare with the cap. Montclair example: a 15,000 square foot lot gets 55 divided by the square root of 15,000, about 44.9%, or roughly 6,736 square feet. West Orange example: a 10,000 square foot lot in R-5 gets 45%, or 4,500 square feet.
- 4Check width and side setback. In Union Township and Clifton the width cap depends on the garage. Both keep the driveway out of the side yard or 5 feet off the line.
- 5Call 811 before anyone digs. New Jersey One Call says the law requires a call at least three full business days ahead, not counting weekends and holidays.
If the new total goes over your zone's cap, ask the zoning office what approval your town requires before you sign anything.

Angi puts asphalt driveway life at 15 to 30 years and concrete at 50 to 100 years. Angi also says asphalt handles both high and low temperatures well. If your driveway is already asphalt, an asphalt extension keeps one surface from the garage to the street.
Randy Seal Coating & Striping works in asphalt only. It does not pour concrete or set pavers. If the old driveway is worn as well, compare the New Jersey driveway resurfacing cost guide before you price the addition on its own.
When to Plan It
HomeAdvisor names late spring to early fall as the best time to pave a driveway. The town approval has to come first, so the winter months are the time to measure, check your zone and collect estimates. Then the paving can go in once the season opens.

Six Questions to Ask Before You Sign
- 1How many square feet, at what price per square foot? Get both numbers in writing so you can compare quotes with the table above.
- 2What does the price include? Ask about removing sod or old pavement, the stone base, grading and hauling.
- 3Is there a minimum charge? Ask before you compare a short strip by the square foot.
- 4Who applies for the town approval, and is the fee in the quote? Some towns want a survey and plan, as Clifton does at 10 feet or wider.
- 5Does the new width fit my zone? Ask the contractor to show the finished width against your town's number.
- 6Who calls 811, and on what date? The call must come at least three full business days before digging.
Driveway Extension Questions New Jersey Homeowners Ask
How much does a driveway extension cost in NJ?
Plan on $7 to $15 per square foot for installed asphalt in 2026. That is the range Angi and HomeAdvisor list. A 200 square foot extension, enough for one more car, works out to about $1,400 to $3,000. These are national figures, not Randy's prices. Removing old pavement, grading and permits can add to the total.
How much does it cost to widen a driveway by one car?
A 10 by 20 foot strip is 200 square feet. At $7 to $15 per square foot, that is about $1,400 to $3,000. Angi puts the national average at $1,900 for a 200 square foot concrete extension. Bob Vila lists asphalt driveway widening at the same $7 to $15 per square foot.
Do you need a permit to extend a driveway in New Jersey?
Plan on checking with the town before work starts. Clifton requires a City Engineer permit for curb work, with a survey and plan when the driveway across the sidewalk is 10 feet or wider. Montclair requires the construction code official's approval for driveway work on the property. Any change at the curb also falls under the town's apron rules.
Does a wider driveway count toward lot coverage?
In most of the towns read for this guide, yes. Union Township, West Orange, Orange, Millburn, Montclair and South Orange all count driveways or pavement toward their coverage limit. Millburn counts gravel driveways and pavers too. Clifton is the exception here: its lot coverage counts structures only.
How wide can a driveway be in New Jersey?
It depends on the town. Union Township caps a driveway at 12 feet for a one-car garage and 24 feet for a two-car garage. Clifton allows 20 feet with no garage or a one-car garage and 30 feet with a two-car garage, and keeps it 5 feet off the side property line. Ask your zoning office for your zone's number.
What is the cheapest way to extend a driveway?
Gravel has the lowest price per square foot: Angi lists $4 to $5. In New Jersey that does not always get around the rules. Millburn counts gravel driveways as paved, and South Orange counts driveways whether paved or unpaved. Randy Seal Coating & Striping works in asphalt only.
Is asphalt or concrete cheaper for a driveway extension?
Asphalt usually costs less up front. Angi lists installed asphalt at $7 to $15 per square foot and concrete at $8 to $18. For a 20 by 20 foot area that is $2,800 to $6,000 in asphalt against $3,200 to $7,200 in concrete. Angi says concrete lasts longer and needs less upkeep.
How much does a 20x20 driveway cost?
A 20 by 20 foot driveway is 400 square feet. In asphalt at $7 to $15 per square foot, that is $2,800 to $6,000. In concrete at $8 to $18, it is $3,200 to $7,200. Both ranges come from Angi's 2026 paving guide.
Does a driveway extension increase home value?
No source read for this guide measures it for New Jersey. Angi says many homeowners find the added value recoups the cost, but it gives no data. Treat resale value as a possible bonus, not the reason to build.
When is the best time to extend an asphalt driveway in NJ?
HomeAdvisor names late spring to early fall as the best time to pave a driveway. In New Jersey the town approval comes first, so winter is a good time to measure, check your zone and get estimates, then pave once the season opens.
